KakaoBank expands AI services and platform reach

The internet bank reported 7.29 million cumulative stock account openings through its brokerage partnership service.

The internet bank, KakaoBank, is transitioning toward an AI native bank model by integrating generative AI into its core user interface. In 2025, the company introduced an AI tab on its home screen to provide centralized access to various AI tools. This rollout included an AI search function, a financial calculator, an AI meeting manager for group accounts, and a conversational transfer service.

Looking toward 2026, the company plans to launch further AI-driven innovations. These include an AI sign language consultation service to assist hearing-impaired users and an AI invitation generator that automatically creates invites when meeting information is entered. Additionally, the company implemented a selfie authentication system into its fraud detection system in January 2026 to verify identities by comparing photos with identification cards.

Beyond AI, the company is growing its platform business through diverse financial and non-financial partnerships,. The brokerage account opening service reached 7.29 million cumulative accounts as of the first quarter of 2026. Other platform milestones include 2.53 million cumulative users for the mini service designed for minors and 14.30 million cumulative accounts for the one-month savings product.

To increase user engagement, the company is diversifying its product lineup. This includes the launch of the MMF Box in June 2025 and the introduction of a credit loan comparison platform in December 2023. The company also provides lifestyle services such as government subsidy searches and overseas travel bookings to encourage daily app usage.

Regarding market conditions, the company noted that while conservative risk management in the banking sector may limit sudden market volatility, concerns persist regarding household debt and consumption slowdowns. The company is monitoring the impact of US Federal Reserve interest rate policies on domestic liquidity and interest levels.

In terms of profitability metrics, the company reported a return on assets of 0.98% and a return on equity of 11.36% for the first quarter of the 11th period. The nominal net interest margin for the same period was 2.00%.
